Commuting by Rail in Maryland and Northern Virginia
The Alternative to Gridlock.
If you will be working in Washington, D.C. and wish to live in the suburbs, you will have to decide whether to drive daily, take the train or take the subway.
The maps below of some of the rail systems will show you where you can
board. Our real estate agents are familiar with communities close to these
boarding locations.
- The Virginia Rail Express (VRE)
- The Maryland Rail Commuter (MARC)
- The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO)
The VRE Train
This is a light rail system to provide Virginia commuters an alternative to Route 66 and Route 95. Traffic on these routes can be heavy at times. We wouldn't mislead you about our area traffic. As more employment opportunities are offered outside Washington, D.C., alternative traffic patterns will develop and are, indeed, developing. However, hundreds of thousands of folks drive to D.C. and back home daily. Virginia rush hour traffic can be particularly vexing, since all vehicular traffic must cross one of six bridges leading into the city.
The MARC Train
This rail system in Maryland is an alternative to Route 270, Route 95, the Baltimore and Washington Parkway, and Route 50 in Maryland. MARC begins as far away as West Virginia and Baltimore. Most popular are the Baltimore to Washington route and the Frederick County, Maryland to Washington route.
The METRO System
The local subway system is wonderful. Convenient retail establishments have developed around the METRO stops. Many stations have residential communities close enough to walk to the station.
Driving In and Out of Washington DC
Our real estate agents have driven the major routes and minor ones for years and can help you understand the traffic patterns in and around the Maryland and Virginia areas.
Typical drive times from suburban locations to downtown D.C. Some locations may add 5-15 minutes depending on traffic.

If you are using the beltway to travel from state to state, Maryland/Virginia, by way of the Potomac River Bridges on the beltway, the traffic will be heavier going from Maryland to Virginia in the a.m. rush and heavier going from Virginia to Maryland in the evening rush.
